Appendices, extensive bibliography, index. In original grey cloth over boards, with gilt titling, and photographic dustjacket. Internally clean, and with no damage to the binding. The dustjacket has a chip at the top of the spine section, and rubbing across both top and bottom edges, and appears to have faded on the left-hand and bottom margins of the front panel as well as on the spine. ". In 1873 Dutch plunged precipitately into a war against Atjeh which they were neither strong enough to win by force more flexible enough to win by diplomacy. For the 1st time in English the causes of this protracted war I here examined in detail, primarily on the basis of Dutch and British archival material. The analysis is carried to the end of the century, when the Dutch sealed Atjeh's fate by definitely adopting a policy of force, thereby crossing the threshold to the High Colonels period in Indonesia as a whole..
