Blue coloured cloth covered boards with gilt coloured illustration and titles to the back strip. Plain text dustwrapper with black coloured titles to the front panel and back strip. Synopsis courtesy of the Scottish Book Trust: – "Set in the imaginary Scottish university town of Inverdoon just after World War I, the book follows Peter ('White-maa'), a restless and ultimately unsuccessful medical student whose studies have been disrupted by active service in the war. He is presented as a force of nature, a man whose good intentions to settle down to his studies and successfully embark upon a life in medical practice are constantly being thwarted by his brawling physicality and thirst for a life of action. From the outset, we sense that Peter's dilemma will only resolve itself in decisive, brutal action - we do not realise quite how brutal this is going to be." Softening of the back strip edges along with some rubbing. Bumping to the top front book edge and to the book corners. Light browning, with scattered foxing, to the text block edges and pages. Offset tanning and foxing to the endpapers with previous owner's name to the top edge of the free front endpaper and previous owners ex libris plate affixed to the front paste-down. The dustwrapper is in three distinct pieces. The front fold over panel has come completely away from the rest of the dustwrapper. The front panel and the majority of the back strip is in one piece with heavy rubbing and tears to the back strip along with some sunning. The rear dustwrapper panel and fold over crease shows rubbing, a few tears and handling marks – please see photograph. Now in protective sleeving.
