acknowledgements. Coloured illustrated frontispiece of Marie Stopes. Red coloured boards with gilt coloured titles to the backstrip. Plain text dustwrapper with black and red coloured titles to the front panel and black coloured titles to the backstrip. In 1923 a case was heard in the British courts of Stopes versus Sutherland. Today it is almost forgotten, but in its time it was highly controversial and its ramifications and effects still felt today. In 1921 Marie Stopes opened the first birth control clinic in the British Empire, at her own expense, to give women of all social strata, particularly the lower and working classes, control over their fertility. In doing so she infuriated the established status quo and in a highly inflammatory article Doctor Halliday Sutherland accused her of "... taking advantage of the ignorance of the poor, who subject to 'experiments of a most harmful and dangerous nature' -- from page 11, among others. Marie Stopes took this man to court for libel and defamation – three trials later she was found not to have had a case, but, as the front fold over panel blurb states "... Yet was it a defeat? The case and the notoriety it received serve to bring about a social revolution, which might otherwise have been delayed for many years. It could therefore be regarded in another sense as a triumphal success." Rubbing of the book corners and backstrip edges. The coloured frontispiece has come adrift from the text block and is only now loosely inserted. Chipping to the dustwrapper corners with rubbing of the dustwrapper edges and panels. Sunning, quite heavy to the backstrip, and lighter sunning to the panels. Remains of a sticker to be seen to the top right hand corner of the front panel. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
