Floral design to the endpapers of both volumes. 1/4 and corners blue coloured cloth binding with gilt coloured titles to the backstrip, along with a small gilt coloured illustration of a flower. 3/4 marbled papered boards. Part of the British Authors series of books by this publisher: – Tauchnitz Edition Vol. 1161. A potboiler from the Victorian times. Volume 1: – softening of the backstrip edges with some fraying. The spine is cocked and rubbing of the book corners and fraying of the cloth is present – underlying board is visible. Flecking of the cloth of the boards with browning of the text block edges and pages. Pages 295 to 298 is loose – printing fault was not caught in the text block when sewn. Page 55 / 56 is somewhat creased as it was not trimmed flush with the rest of the text block. Previous owners name to the verso of the free front end paper. Volume 2: – Softening of the backstrip edges with frame. Slight cocking of the spine with rubbing of the book corners and bumping to the lower book corners. Underlying board is visible.
