IV, 288 pages, acknowledgements, foreword by Field-Marshal Sir Claude Auchinleck, two appendices and index. Map illustrated endpapers, both different, front end paper -- showing a map of France, the rear end paper showing a map of north Africa. Black-and-white photographic frontispiece of Field-Marshal Rommel. The text is illustrated with 10 sepia toned photographs throughout the book and the occasional map. Dark red coloured cloth covered boards with gilt embossed illustration to the front panel and gilt coloured titles to the backstrip. The biography of the North African Fox -- Field-Marshal Rommel. He was the scourge of the English Eighth Army. Despite being starved of all support and supplies he fought the English to a standstill until the lack of supplies made his North Africa campaign a losing proposition. He then went back to Germany, where loyalty to his country, rather than the High Command ie., Hitler, caused him to attempt to assassinate Hitler. He was summarily executed. But his legend still lives. Softening to the backstrip edges with bumping and rubbing and fraying of the book corners. Underlying board is visible to the top right-hand corner of the front panel and lower corner of the same panel. Rubbing, marks and some fading to the cloth of the boards and there has been almost complete fading of the gilt titles to the backstrip. Heavy browning and light foxing to the text block edges with the lower textblock edge deckled. Browning and faint foxing to the endpapers with browning of the pages and ink marks to some of the pages. Previous owners name, in blue coloured ink, along with cream-coloured date rubber stamp and other locations in blue coloured ink to the title page. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
