The text is illustrated with over 300 black-and-white illustrations across the entire time line of the English language being written. Light blue coloured cloth boards with gilt illustration on the front panel ( Cambridge University Press shield ], with dark gray insert to the backstrip and within that insert gilt titles and there is a smaller gilt shield beneath the titles of the backstrip. A little rubbing to the backstrip edges and book edges and bumping to the top book corners. Light dustiness to the top text block edge. On the front fore paper edges, some red staining has occurred. Colour illustrated dustwrapper, showing an illustration of Samuel Johnson on the front panel, with white and black titles to the front panel and backstrip. Rubbing and creasing to the dustwrapper edges and to the dustwrapper panels.
