Despite being starved of all support and supplies he fought the English to a standstill until the lack of supplies made his North Africa campaign a losing proposition. He then went back to Germany, where loyalty to his country, rather than the High Command ie., Hitler, caused him to attempt to assassinate Hitler. He was summarily executed.
