list of illustrations. Gray coloured endpapers. Eight illustrations by Gordon Browne within the text, the frontispiece is not present and appears not to have been a part of this publication. Green/gilt coloured tint to all edges of the text block. Illustrated cover, showing a young man with a gun and a game bag on his shoulder ( showing a dead bird in his bag ) standing amongst some grass, rendered in gilt. He has a background of red coloured cloth. There is another illustration which shows a jungle lagoon with a crocodile's head on the water against a background of darker green and red colouration and there is a touch of gilt in some of the grasses as well, lower right-hand corner of the front panel. On the back strip there is a gilt insert which has some gilt floral decoration but the writing has been rendered in red. A smaller gilt insert with the author's name. The illustration to the lower back strip edge again shows a crocodile's head. Gilt writing to the front cover. Heavy rubbing and bumping and fraying to the book corners, underlying board is visible to all book corners. Bumping, rubbing and small tears to both the top and bottom back strip edge. Heavy shelf wear to the lower book edge. There is fading of the book cloth to the lower left-hand corner of the front panel. The book cloth is heavily rubbed and marked and a lot of the gilt has been worn away from both the front cover at and back strip region. The rear book cover is quite marked and stained. There is a loose illustration between pages 196 and 197. The spine has split between pages 240 and 41 and the webbing can be seen between the pages. The spine is quite cocked. Browning of the endpapers and original bookseller's sticker to the lower left-hand corner of the rear paste down. Rubbing of the colour from the text block edge. Gift inscription to the verso of the free front in paper [ dated 1905 ]. Light foxing to the first few and last few pages of the book. Only slight tanning of the internal pages and a few handling marks. Within the section at the back of the book there are numerous small black-and-white illustrations taken from the books spoken about. A book of derring-do and bravery set during one of the numerous wars in Africa in the late 1800s. Size: 12mo (standard paperback).
