176 pages, last blank, Afterwords, The Background Is Accurate. Illustrated endpapers, being reproductions of original etchings of early steam travel in Australia. Black-and-white illustrated frontispiece by Graham Wade, who also executed the numerous in-text drawings in black-and-white. Green coloured boards with gilt writing on the spine. Very slight bumping to the head and to the heel of the spine and there is a little discolouration to the top book edge. Browning and slight foxing to the top paper edge and browning to the other paper edges. Original bookseller' sticker on the lower right-hand corner of the front paste down. Illustrated dustwrapper ( wraparound ), again by Graham Wade, with orange background and, small illustration of Australia on the top right-hand corner of the front panel and an illustration of a gun and a whip on the spine. The dustwrapper is rubbed and faded, fading particularly noticeable on the spine. Some creasing and rubbing to the dustwrapper edges and creases. This is an adventure story set in the exciting days of the 1860's, when the railways were pushing westwards from Sydney across the coastal plains of eastern Australia. The Stagecoach owners felt sure that the iron monsters would never across the barrier of the Blue Mountains. This is the first Australian edition. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
