FRANZ DONAT [editor]. Large Book of Textile Designs, Vienna and Leipzig: A. Hartleben, undated (1904). Large, oblong folio (weighs 18 pounds or a little more than 8 kilograms), first edition, pp. 41, xii (special plates), 288, 1 (swatches), original brown cloth boards rebound in quarter morocco, text in German, French and English. In addition to the rebinding, several leaves including the title page were professionally repaired. One design, a portion of Plate 288, is missing, apparently razored out, a few other leaves are nicked at the margins with no loss of content. Several blank endpages were added in the rebinding. The plates are printed on one side only. This was the reference copy of the American designer David Byers, with scattered pencil marks and small transparent stickers that served as instructions to staff. This copy is very sound and sturdy, the hinges being well fortified. OCLC/Worldcat locates several copies in European and American libraries. Donat says he created this work to illustrate the infinite possibilities in textile design. It shows more than 9,000 designs, mostly in blue and white. Size: Large Folio (bigger than A3). Text contains marks and notes scattered throughout, in pencil. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Over 3 kilos. Category: Fashion, Fabrics & Style; 1900-1920; Antiquarian & Rare. Pictures of this item not already displayed here available upon request. Inventory No: 54050.
