A fragment of an earlier morality play, 'The Pride of Life' has come down to us and there are references to a lost Pater Noster play at York, first mentioned in 1378, which seems to have dramatised the conflict of Sins and Virtues. It is impossible to date 'The Castle' precisely, but it was probably written between 1400 and 1425. the dialect is that of the East-Midlands, with a strong Northern influence."
