A romance between a bumptious American Air Force officer and a tiresome British actress comes a cropper in this irritating tale of extra-marital relations. Major Bill Schcyen, en route to an American base in England, crashes with a crew of three. As the only survivor, Bill insists on remaining in England to follow up a suspicion of sabotage, which eventually leads him to the culprit. During this investigation, Bill meets Emma Reynolds, a fragile, titian-haired actress appearing in repertory near the base. Emma, recently scarred by her writer husband's philandering, freezes to a single minded concern with her career, but Bill is heavily smitten and the pursuit winds its tortuous way. The sheer weight of Yankee perseverance wins, but when wife Miriam shows up with the children, Bill discovers that his responsibility toward Emma's new found radiance precludes a happy family solution. Such grand troubles deserve livelier participants, and it is most curious to meet a hero who does his best sleuthing at the height of amorous costasy. 255 pages. Tanning to pages.
