Size: Folio. 2 volumes of the 3-volume set. Text is in Latin. Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Volumes I & II only. Original vellum over boards, 19th c. re-backing with gilt stamped leather, five raised bands, red leather spine labels, all edges red; Volume I, [2], Title page, [68], 2 page fold-out plate, [2], 624 pages, engraved portrait of Pitiscus, engraved frontispiece; Vol. II full page engraving, 715 pages. Vellum scratched and soiled, leather on spine chipped with pieces missing, corners, edges and spine ends worn, end papers soiled, foxing mostly confined to top edge of pages, damp stain off and on lower edge near gutter Vol. I; previous owner's name on title page - twice on Vol. I - and previous owner bookplate on front end paper of each volume. Bookplate belonged to Etienne Felix d'Henin de Cuvillers (1755-1841), made a Baron de l'empire in 1774, credited with popularizing a system of scientific nomenclature by using the prefix "hypn" in words such as "hypnotique" (hypnotic) and "hypnotisme" (hypnotism).
