Size: Octavo (standard book size). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. This is a reprint of a report written in 1858 by the consulting engineer to the Virginia Central Railroad, Charles Ellet, Jr., published by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway Company probably in the early 1960s. It is accompanied by a letter from the Vice President of the C & O extolling the virtues of the report. Stapled wraps, 38 pages. A little staining where the staples have rusted and discolored the wraps, staple holes at top edge where letter was fastened when we got the book, otherwise excellent. From the letter written by James E. Doyle: "When Jim LYne of the Railway Age first read Charles Ellet's report on rate structures, he said: 'If anyone has defined the 'floor' and 'ceiling' to freight rates more plainly in the last 50 years, the definition has escaped my notice.' A remarkable man, Charles Ellet was a man of wide interest and achievements: transport expert, builder, inventor, author, naval architect, military hero. He built the Virginia Central across the barrier of the Blue Ridge, built the first suspension bridge in the United States, wrote prolifically on topics ranging from flood control to military supply, invented ram boats used with such effect in the Civil War and commanded a fleet of them. We thought you would enjoy reading his simple, brief exposition of the science of pricing, as timely today as it was a century or more ago." Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 1 lb 6 oz.
