Size: Octavo (standard book size). Bright, whimsical hand-colored engravings make this scarce children's book a delight. Jack Huckaback, The Scapegrace Raven is a tale told in rhyme about Jack Huckaback, a rascally raven, caught and brought home by a a lad named Fred. Jack Huckaback manages to get into quite a lot of trouble, surviving run-ins with Aunt Jane, the dog Pincher and Tom Cat while knocking over dishes, pots, beer, and bilberry marmalade, before sampling some wine and meeting an untimely end. Translated from the German by J.S.S. Rothwell, this 24 page book is undated, but most likely late 19th or early 20th century. The beautiful, vibrant colors of the illustrations are original to the book. At the bottom of the cover in small print is the word "Colored." Each page is illustrated, one side of the page only. Binding is color illustrated paper over boards with a red cloth spine. 9 3/8" x 6 3/8". It is no wonder that this book is hard to find, for it is very fragile even for a children's book. Covers are soiled, there is wear at the corners and spine ends and along the edges of the boards. Cloth on spine is slit at top and bottom of spine. Text block is holding together (with the exception of the front free end paper, which is detached but present), but the front cover is pulling away and the front hinge is cracked. End papers are toned as are interior pages to a lesser degree. Previous owner's book plate on front paste-down as well as his signature on both front end papers. There are some random stains on some of the pages, but they do not touch the illustrations. On about eight pages, the stains extend into the double line box or border around the illustration. Despite its defects, this book is still quite colorful, quite entertaining and a rare treasure for the children's book collector. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 1 lb 12 oz.
