Size: Tall Folio. Text is in French. Text body is clean and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. More than 1 1/2 years of L'Univers Illustre, the French equivalent to the American Harper's Weekly. Covers December 1861-May 1863. In French. Dark green paper over boards, green leather spine with raised bands and gilt lettering and decoration. Each issue has a wood engraved rebus. Chock full of articles and wood engravings related to European political, cultural, and scientific events, as well as commentary on the Americas. In the 1862 issues: Page 101, full page engraving of the U.S. Capitol construction; page 107 article on Confederate cabinet appointments; page 108, engraving of Gen. Beauregard; page 116 Harper's Ferry engraving and article; page 145, battle of Merrimac with Cumberland & Congress; page 189, London exposition engraving. In the 1863 issues: Page 56 of Jan. 1863, image of the Battle of Fredericksburg; page 77, full page engraving of New York City plus an article. Interior is in very good conditon, clean and tight. Exterior: rubbing at corners, along edges, spine ends and spine bands, a few scratches to boards, leather spine has several dings. one page has a tear repaired with archival tape.
