In the past, when horses roamed free, they instinctively maintained their health by seeking out and consuming a variety of grasses, grains, herbs, and mineral-salt deposits at specific times of the year or for specific physical needs. The lives of our modern horses are very different - they are often confined, their exercise usually consists of structured workouts for specific sports, and they are fed processed food and medicated with pharmaceutical chemicals. In an effort to live healthier, more natural lives, many people are returning to more traditional health-care methods for themselves, and now, we can do our horses the same favour. "Herbal Horsekeeping" introduces the reader to the ins-and-outs of one of the oldest and most effective medical methods. Topics covered include: understanding, growing, and preparing herbs; herbs for your horse's general health, and for the performance and breeding horse; and treatments for specific conditions and basic recipes. Included is a list of specific herbs, their identifying characteristics, and their individual actions.......About the Author Robert McDowell is a trained medical/veterinary herbalist who has a busy practice in Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia. He entered full-time herbal practice in 1985, treating his patients for a range of physiological, environmental and stress-related illnesses. Through his work he has helped herbal medicine gain mainstream acceptance. While his practice dealt initially with humans, in 1991, as a result of overwhelming requests, he expanded the practice to include animals. Di Rowling is a professional graphic designer and freelance writer. She has contributed many feature articles to magazines and journals over the years - a large percentage of them to equestrian magazines. In addition, she was consulting editor, regular contributor and graphic designer for an Australian equestrian magazine for over ten years. Di has also owned and ridden horses for most of her adult life, and has for many years combined her love of horses with a fascination for the alternative therapies - in particular, herbalism and homeopathy.
