And nearly all these words focus on the men who fought in this terrible war. Red Poppies and the White Waratah is a tribute to women, many of whom are unknown, of the Wollondilly Shire & nearby districts. There were the nurses who joined the Australian Army Nursing Service & endured often horrific conditions as they cared for sick & wounded men. Many became ill themselves. At home, civilian women devoted their time to fund raising & providing items that were essential to the well-being of servicemen abroad. They also undertook the care of families, businesses & farms. Wounded & sick men returned, broken by their experiences. It was their womenfolk who nursed & supported them amidst many hardships.
