"It is not quite clear why Palmer became infatuated with the sea. His father was a veterinarian specialising in horse breeding. The farm was far removed from the sea & this young man grew up associated with horses & farm animals, but in 1916 we find him serving as a cadet onboard a large sailing ship bound for Europe via Cape Horn. The voyage took 112 days before arriving in Bordeaux. The vessel was sunk by a U-Boat off Lands End, England & the crew finally reached Penzance after 2 1/2 days in one lifeboat, Palmer did not know anybody & had very little money - a combination that caused him to join the Royal Navy where he trained as a gunner & served with the Grand Fleet..."
