There is a quality of timelessness about the old photographs in this book. They record a pre-Industrial Revolutionary Cambridgeshire where hand flails were commonplace, a good hurdle-maker was a man of note, and woad was still grown for dyeing. The book is arranged in such sections as Towns and Villages, Rural Crafts and Industries, Special Occasions, Transport, People and Sport. There are pictures here of the activities particularly associated with the County: skating championships, peat cutting, osier tripping and soft fruit cultivation; as well as of subjects of more general interest: market days, horse carriages, windmills, royal occasions and village 'feasts'. The photographers whose work is represented include local men such as F. ]. Smith of Cottenham and J. R. Cooper of Burwell, national celebrities like Francis Frith, and - typically, in what is so often an anonymous art - many more whose names have not been preserved. Anonymous or otherwise, the work of these photographers is often of an aesthetic quality which is as striking as the people and events they depict. F. A. Reeve's long years of residence in Cambridge, and his standing as a local historian, pre-eminentlv qualify him to write the Introduction and picture commentaries to a book which makes a distinctive contribution to the social history of Cambridgeshire in the period from the 1850s to the First World War. Unpaginated. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. 120 pages. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Dust Jacket un-clipped. Gilt titles spine. blue cloth; illustrated by 154 b/w. photo's..
