Description of subject matter printed on insides of covers; The part played by the Cambridge press in rallying and reflecting local public opinion on local and national issues is discussed by Michael Murphy clearly and judiciously, and at the right level of selected detail. Cambridge was not only an important country town but also one of the two university centres, and its reactions therefore possess an especial significance in terms of national opinion. Moreover, the career of Benjamin Flower, editor of the Cambridge Intelligencer, was of national importance. Flower, who has been half-forgotten since his own day, now emerges as an important early Radical and as one of the great pioneers of English journalism, who spoke to a national readership from a local base. In Michael Murphy's words, at the height of the French Revolution in 1793 Flower 'set out to instruct public opinion by reporting parliamentary proceedings and political meetings, and, much more important, by criticising party and authority through powerfully-worded editorial articles. The Intelligencer was the first provincial newspaper in England to develop these new techniques and continue them for an appreciable length of time.' Size: Octavo (standard book size). 144 pages.
