Author was in the Burmese administration after years as a regimental officer in the 1914-18 war. In WW2 he served with the Royal Army Ordnance Corps in France during the "Phoney War", and later in the Western Desert and in Western Europe after D-Day. The most important part of the author's service concerned his being required to inspect ordnance stores including many kinds of weapons, instruments & vehicles. In collaboration with the Military Police he found an astonishing number of completely bogus repair & maintenance workshops in the rear areas staffed by deserters from the desert army.
