950 g; 130 pages, illustrated throughout with part page and full-page black-and-white photographs, and with one tipped in plate being page 51/52, a colour illustration of the red Cardinal. The plate is detached partially. Girls' Grammar School prize bookplate dated 1919 on the front end page, bumping and rubbing of the heel of the spine, and the lower corners, as well as the top corner of the front panel, and the head of the spine. The stitching is visible at a couple of the gatherings, and the hinging while complete, is sloppy. The front board is illustrated with a two colour blind stamped and filled illustration of birds crossing in front of reeds, with the sun in the background. "This is the keynote of the book: it is for the ear; to be read aloud; in many of the rhymed lines the intended and proper effect can be obtained only by charging the lines and lengthening or shortening the syllables to fit the metre, like a rune or incantation. The book is about living things, for the most part baby creatures, for which all children have natural affection. The regularity of rhythm, which was designed to make the lines mated to children, was intentional and used for that purpose." Page 19 Size: 4to 9¾" - 12" tall.
