On the fifth of August 1944, more than 1100 Japanese prisoners of war staged a mass breakout of their camp just outside of Cowra. Of the prisoners who escaped, 231 died, and 334 did escape, but was subsequently recaptured in the following nine days. This episode was basically hidden and cloaked in secrecy for many years, now Harry Gordon has put together the sequence of events, the reasons behind the breakout and the consequences of this action in a readable tale.
