In 1977 the Australian National Parks and wildlife service engaged the author as a specialist consultant to make a preliminary examination of the conservation status of Australian insects. He was asked to report, among other things, on species of insect that might be endangered and in need of protection, the ecological role of such species in their respective ecosystems, the desirable protection measures and the types of investigation that might be undertaken to provide further relevant information on these matters. This is the first in a series of occasional papers to be published by the servers to encourage discussion on important issues and aspects of nature conservation in Australia. -- Professor J. D.
