"On January 15, 1957 Harold Nicolson and his wife Vita Sackville-West, embarked on a cruise to Java and back aboard the liner William Ruys. It was, he writes, "two of the happiest months which, in a life of wholly unmerited felicity, I have enjoyed." ..... but the journey he describes was not only to Java. It was also an intellectual journey, an excursion, with the aid of a planned course of specialised reading into the reasons why after the Napoleonic Wars young romantics indulged in melancholy, whereas now they indulge in anger. .... both journeys, the physical and intellectual, are enlivened with references to classical and to French and German literature, and throughout the reader is left with the agreeable impression that he too, is thoroughly at home in this literary world."
