XLII, 368 pp., tape marks on rear paste down, and on p. IV, slight bumping to the head of the spine. Introduction by Mark Schorer. Preface by Archibald Macleish. "This edition is the third manuscript version first published by Giuseppe Orioli, florence, 1928 " Lady Chatterley's Lover was long contraband in England and the United States; police and customs officials routinely searched for and destroyed any copies of the books they could find; bookdealers caught selling the book from under the counter were prosecuted and punished" (de Grazia, 89-93). Lawrence responded to charges against his book in a 1929 pamphlet titled "Pornography and Obscenity," which he opened with the line, "What is pornography to one man is the laughter of genius to another." Lady Chatterley's Lover was not available in the U.S. until Grove Press brought the matter to court in 1959, over thirty years after the publication of the first edition. When I purchased this book, I thought I was buying a copy of "Mrs Miniver" because that was the dustwrapper surrounding it! Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Please refer to accompanying picture (s).
