The Fortunes of Richard Mahony, is a complex portrayal of the author's own father – and an analysis of human inadequacy, was published as a trilogy between 1917 -1929. This book is the first volume, and as the rear panel blurb states "Mahony's personal history is closely interwoven with the history of the colony of Victoria at the time of the Ballarat gold rush. Colonial life, although the source of his prosperity, becomes for Mahony the prime cause of an incurable dissatisfaction with his lot." Creasing to the book corners with rubbing of the book edges and panels. There is a large triangular crease to the top right-hand corner of the front panel. Reading creases to the backstrip with browning of the text block edges and pages. Sunning to the backstrip with stains also present.
