Dark rose coloured cloth covered boards with gilt coloured titles to the backstrip. Illustrated dustwrapper with brown coloured titles to the front panel and black coloured titles to the backstrip. NOTE: the dustwrapper states that it is "second impression", to the lower left-hand corner of the front fold over panel there were too few wrappers initially printed for the amount of books printed, and so most copies of the first edition had a wrapper stating the fact that it was a second edition. This is the author's first work and the first in his monumental "Gormenghast" sequence. Minor softening to the head and to the heel of the backstrip and age toning of the textblock edges and pages will. the book has been made in conformity with economy standards of World War II and states same on the verso of the title page.
