preface by author, list of illustrations and index. Black-and-white illustrated frontispiece, of a young Napoleon Bonaparte, with a complete and good condition tissue guard. The text is illustrated with 30 contemporary black and white illustrations. At the beginning of the text. There is a 2 page foldout map showing France in 1793. Dark red coloured cloth covered boards with gilt illustration to the lower right-hand corner of the front board and gilt decoration to the boards. A book published in the last years of the 19th century dealing with one of the most extraordinary figures of that century – Napoleon Bonaparte. The author has tried to be dispassionate about the man and his time, while placing him in his proper place in history. This book is in good condition for its age. Softening with a little fraying of the backstrip edges and of the book corners – which also show some bumping. Rubbing and marking of the book panels and the textblock edges show browning and foxing. Foxing to the endpapers and browning to the internal text. The results of insect activity can be seen along the front fore edge of the front paste-down. The major fault with the book is the block of pages from 169 through two page 215 which have become somewhat loose from the rest of the textblock. The illustration which goes between page 214 and 215 has completely come away from the textblock, and it also has tape residue from a previous owner supporting a small tear to the lower edge. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. (2), III-XVII, (1), 433, (5) pages,. Please refer to accompanying picture (s). Illustrator: Illustrated. Quantity Available: 1. Category: Biography & Autobiography; Military; France; 19th century; History. Inventory No: 0112692.
