Black coloured boards with gilt titles to the backstrip. Black-and-white photographic dustwrapper, showing a conning tower of a U-boat, with yellow and white titles to the front panel and backstrip. The biography of Captain Otto Kretschmer of the German U-boat -- U-99, who until his capture in 1941 had a reputation of being not only consummate Captain, at a man who also fought with honour and with humanity. Despite this, he caused more destruction on the high seas (with a daring new submarine attack) than any other commander -- EVER. Even when placed in a prisoner of war camp in Canada in the organised "... an espionage group which built a transmitter and sent a stream of important information to Germany." -- from the front fold over panel blurb. Minor rubbing to the backstrip corners and book corners. A few marks and rubs to the book panels. Browning and foxing to the top text block edge and browning to the other edges. Age toning to the endpapers and to the internal text. There is a stain on page 93/94 along the front fore edge. Rubbing to the dustwrapper edges, dustwrapper creases and to the dustwrapper panels, particularly the rear panel.
