560 g.; X, 11-224 pages, last five pages blank intentionally, foreword by author, acknowledgements, list of illustrations and index. Gray coloured endpapers. Black-and-white photographic frontispiece, showing five separate photographs of the author at different ages. The text is illustrated with eight pages of black-and-white photography throughout the text. Blue coloured cloth boards with black insert on the backstrip, and within that insert gilt titles. A little bumping to the backstrip edges and rubbing to the book corners. Dust marks and light browning to the top text block edge. Very light age turning to the internal text. Plain text dustwrapper with mottled brown and yellow background with blue and white titles to the front panel and backstrip. Black-and-white photograph of the author to the rear dustwrapper panel. A little rubbing and creasing to the backstrip edges and to the dustwrapper corners. Rubbing to the rear fold over crease and to either side of the spine. Sunning to the backstrip. Clipping of the dustwrapper, front fold over, lower right-hand corner. The autobiography of the author who was brought up by his very nonconformist father that " ... the faith that individual conscience comes before State, or Party or worldly success. " -- from the front fold over panel blurb. To this end he was a passionate pacifist in World War I but ended up an ambulance orderly in France during the years1917-1918. Then went to Cambridge and after graduating went to the newspapers Manchester Guardian and the New Statesman, where he made them a forum to express strong individual opinion.
