In this book the editors tell about " ... the help given by the Polish people to the victims of the Nuremberg laws when the Nazis occupied their country. At the outbreak of World War II common Poland had a larger Jewish population than any other country in the world. According to the latest census, 3 1/2 million citizens had registered themselves as practising Jews, and this number alone constituted more than a 10th of the total population of Poland. Further, there were about 100,000 members of Christian churches whose Jewish origin was sufficient to condemn them in the eyes of the Nazis . Jewish historians give different estimates of the number of Jews who managed to survive the German occupation of Poland. The figures range from between 40 or 50,000 to a hundred or 120,000. Only a very small portion survived the war in concentration camps, labour camps and prisoner of war camps. The remaining survivors owe their lives to the Polish people, to the gorillas and private individuals who concealed and succoured them." -- from the rear fold over panel.
