foreword by R.T. Clark, and index. Dark red coloured boards with gilt coloured titles to the backstrip. Red coloured tint to the top text block edge. Bumping and fading to the top edge of the backstrip and bumping to the lower edge. Rubbing to the book corners and shelf wear to the lower book edges. Light browning to the text block edges and to the endpapers and internal text. Previous owner's ex libris plate to the top right-hand corner of the free front end paper and original bookseller's sticker to the lower right-hand corner of the front paste-down. Plain text dustwrapper with purple coloured background and light gray coloured titles to the front panel and backstrip. A little rubbing to the dustwrapper corners and to the dustwrapper edges. Rubbing and chipping, with loss to the top backstrip edge and rubbing and creasing to the lower. There is a 1 inch tear to the top right-hand corner of the rear dustwrapper panel, with associated creasing. Darkening of the backstrip region. Clipping of the dustwrapper, front fold over, lower right-hand corner. In 1944 the author wrote an optimistic look at a new world that appeared to be opening before him called " Faith, Reason and Civilisation ". Within five years the prophecies that he predicted in his book were being refuted, and he started writing an additional chapter to update his previous book. He died before he could finish the chapter and " .... what was left, revised and to some extent shapeless, was at work almost as large as the book to which it was to be an appendix. There was so much in it of Laski that with Mrs Laski's consent it was decided to make it available to his many readers here and abroad. With the exception of necessary corrections, division into chapters and rectification of certain statements which he himself would, had he lived, most certainly have rectified, it is published as he left that -- were perhaps imperfect and unfinished, but the last work and not the least important of the cutest and most sympathetic minds of our time -- from the front fold over panel.
