IV, 398 pages, last blank. Black coloured boards with gilt writing to the backstrip. Bumping to the top backstrip edge and a little rubbing to the lower edge. Bumping to the top right-hand corner of the front board. A few marks to the book panels. Light browning to the paper edges along with some faint foxing. Heavier foxing to the endpapers and offset tanning is also present Illustrated dustwrapper, by Patricia Davey, with white writing on the front panel and spine. Rubbing and the chipping to the dustwrapper corners. There is rubbing and crumpling to the top and bottom dustwrapper edges. There is a 0.25 " tear to the top edge of the rear panel with associated creasing. There are two smaller tears to that edge of the dustwrapper as well. There is one small tear to the lower edge of the rear dustwrapper panel and a small tear to the lower edge of the rear spine gutter with associated creasing. To the lower left hand corner of the front panel there is a 1 " tear with creasing and rubbing. The front panel has also a small mark with something has been placed upon the dustwrapper. General rubbing and wear and yellowing off the back panel is also present. Clipping of the dustwrapper, front fold over, lower right-hand corner. Heavy foxing noted on the verso of the dustwrapper. Translated from the original German by Oliver Cocburn. Original title in German was 'Haie und kleine Fische'. A highly controversial novel when it was first published in its original German it is the story of German U-boat warfare in World War II, as seen and experienced by the men who manned the U-boat submarines of the German Navy. The author himself was a member of a U-boat and brings his experiences to the writing of this book. Author's first book. This book was reprinted before publication in October 1957.
