240 pages, list of illustrations. Illustrated endpapers, showing a map of New Guinea and its environs. Text is illustrated with numerous black and white photographs. Blue coloured boards with gilt writing on spine. The corners of book are bumped and rubbed and shelf wear is evident to the bottom edges of book. Head and heel of spine are bumped and soft. The front and back panel have mildew residue. The internal pages are brown. Photographic/illustrated dustwrapper, photograph of a New Guinea Highlander overlaying an illustrated painting of New Guinea village, black & white writing front panel and red and black on spine. Corners of the dustwrapper are rubbed, as are the fore edges. Chipping has occurred to the top and bottom dustwrapper edge, particularly on spine. There has been some staining to the dustwrapper, on the verso, along all creases. Grubby marks to the back panel. Olaf Ruhen travelled through, then, Papua and Australian New Guinea during the early 1960s, travelling through some of the remotest areas, meeting tribes who did not know that white men existed and pondered the islands' history.
