Throughout the book there are 47 coloured plates (6 double-page) and numerous black and white illustrations. Photographic endpapers, showing Flemington racecourse from the air. Bottle green coloured boards with embossed gilt illustration on the front right-hand corner with gilt coloured titles on the backstrip. Illustrated dustwrapper, showing scene at an early Melbourne Cup, with white coloured background and maroon and black coloured titles on front cover and on the spine. The story of 'The Race That Stops The Nation'. From its beginnings in 1840 to the 1960s, this book is authentic and readable history of not only racing itself but of the social event that has sprung up around a race meet. Minor rubbing of the corners has occurred and the head and the heel of the spine are soft. The dustwrapper has been water damaged, with the majority of front panel and the spine involved (more noticeable on the verso of the dustwrapper). There has been fading and rubbing of the dustwrapper, there has been loss of colour on front panel. Fading particularly noticeable on the spine and there are some minor chipping along top edge and top corners. Size: 4to 9¾" - 12" tall.
