NICOLAS BARKER. Hortus Eystettensis, The Bishop's Garden and Besler's Magnificent Book, New York: Abrams, 1994. Large folio, modern version of a rare 17th-century work, pp. vii, 80, 80 (color plates), blue cloth boards with gilt lettering to the spine. Barker, the 20th-century librarian and bibliophile, extensively researched the original German illustrated book to bring together this partial reprint, which, at about 15x12 inches, is only half the size of the first edition. Still, outside of a few rare-book libraries, this is the only version most of us will ever be able to own. Basilius Besler's early 1600s project, which brought together the work of many artists and crafts people, was a series of copper-plate engravings that are among the greatest botanical illustrations ever made, the colored copies being especially valued. Condition of this book: Fine, no flaws. Shipments outside the U.S. may be subject to local taxes. Size: Large Folio (bigger than A3). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing.
