Quarto, later edition (first was 1878), pp. 57, paper-covered boards, all edges tinted green, engraved by Edmund Evans, inscribed to "Baby Cynthia" on the free front endpaper. This was Greenaway's first book, and a smash hit, although when Evans decided to print 20,000 copies right away, the publisher was "aghast at the prospect of having to sell so many copies." After they sold almost immediately, Greenaway was on her way to riches and stardom (Percy Muir, English Children's Books, p. 184).
