Bradbury & Evans, 1857, Hardcover (Full Leather), Book Condition: Good, Dust Jacket Condition: No, First, Illustrated By: Phiz
CHARLES DICKENS. Little Dorrit, London: Bradbury & Evans, 1857. Octavo, first edition, pp. xiv, 625, contemporary brown calf boards quarter-bound in brown buckram (a repair) with a flaking backstrip laid down, all edges gilt, fresh blank leaves bound between the original marbled endpages, 40 illustrated plates by Hablot Browne ("Phiz"), bookplate of Cardiff Castle on front paste-down. Pasted to the free front endpaper is a certificate of authenticity from a defunct London bookstore that named itself The Old Curiosity Shop after Dickens released his novel of that name. This certificate, which guarantees the book to be a first edition, is signed by L. Lewis, one of the bookstore owners. And indeed, this copy meets all first-edition points listed in Smith. A former owner has penciled in neat little corrections of a few of the original typographic errors. The Phiz illustrations are a mixed lot, with some missing the point of the scene being illustrated, others "very beautiful examples of his Art" -- David Croal Thomson, Hablot Knight Browne, p. 141. Condition of this book: Covers stained, heavy foxing to prelims, light foxing inside, illustrated title pages stained, other plates have stains at the edges, images fine. Overall good and sound. Shipments outside the U.S. may be subject to local taxes. Size: Octavo (standard book size). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing. Illustrator: Phiz. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 1-2 kilos. Category: Antiquarian & Rare; England; 19th century; Literature & Literary. Pictures of this item not already displayed here available upon request. Inventory No: 55017.
