VICTOR HUGO. The Toilers of the Sea, New York: Limited Editions Club, 1960. Quarto, No. 1,164 of an edition of 1,500, pp. xx, 579, 1 (limitation page), printed boards quarter-bound in black cloth with a green calf label to spine, slipcased, illustrated by Tranquillo Marangoni and signed by Marangoni on the limitation page. Also signed by the printer, Giovanni (formerly Hans) Mardersteig of Officina Bodoni in Verona. Mardersteig "once described the printer's task as consisting of three duties: service to the author, in finding the form best suited to his work; service to the reader, in making reading pleasant and easy; and giving an attractive appearance to the whole book without imposing on it too much of his own personality. The Officina Bodoni's books admirably fulfil these aims, justifying Will Carter's description of his fellow printer as 'possibly the finest pressman the world has ever seen or is ever likely to see' " (Philippa Bernard et al., Antiquarian Books, A Companion, p. 316). Condition of this book: Near fine, dust jacket sunned at spine, slipcase lightly worn. Special Limited Edition, first issue in this format. Size: Quarto.
