R.S. THOMAS. The Mountains, New York: Chilmark Press, 1968. Quarto, copy No. 196 of an edition of 350, pp. 43, 1 (colophon), printed boards quarter-bound in blue cloth with gilt lettering to the spine, slipcased, parchment wrapper perished, top edge tinted blue, other edges untrimmed, engravings after John Piper by Reynolds Stone, design by Will and Sebastian Carter at Rampant Lions Press on mold-made paper by Wookey Hole Mill. Although the author was known as a poet, and this book does have a short poem, it is primarily Thomas' prose observations on mountains in Wales and his wanderings among them, keenly illustrated by Piper. Piper, who was English, had a wide-ranging arts career that included landscape paintings and stained glass. Rampant Lions Press was found by Will Carter, "one of the most consistently distinguished and delightful contemporary printers (Philippa Bernard et al., Antiquarian Books, p. 348)."
