REV. FATHER ISAAC JOGUES. Novum Belgium, An Account of New Netherland in 1643-4, New York: privately printed, 1862. Quarto, editio princeps of 100 copies, pp. 53, 1 (dedication), maroon buckram library binding with gilt lettering to spine, folding map, harbor view, portrait, library markings, ex-Columbia University copy with de-accession sticker and former owner's book label on front pastedown, bound-in endpaper with a gift inscription by John Gilmary Shea, the compiler of this book. The inscription predates the book by two years. Jogues' manuscript is here reproduced in facsimile, followed by a printing in French and another in English, with a folding map and a harbor view. Howes and Sabin both call for two portraits, but the present copy has only one. Howes J118: "One of the earliest descriptions of New York City." Sabin 36144. Condition of this book Covers have a few marks, portrait offset to title page, over all very sound. Size: Quarto. Text is in multiple languages. Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing.
