Houghton Mifflin, 1886, Hardcover (Half Leather), Book Condition: Good, Dust Jacket Condition: No, Early, Illustrated By: Elihu Vedder
[ELIHU VEDDER.] Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, The Astronomer-Poet of Persia, Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1886. Folio, early edition (first was 1884), unpaginated with 53 illustrated plates by Elihu Vedder and 15 pages of notes and appendix, half green calf over marbled boards with gilt lettering to spine, added endpapers. Vedder was an American painter of no particular school. This foray into book illustration is his best-known work. Frank Weitenkampf, in his revised American Graphic Art (Macmillan), said the Vedder Rubaiyat gained much "from the circumstance that each page of the book is drawn, text as well as surrounding design, by the same hand. That emphasizes the advantage and importance of having the book, as a mechanical product, 'cast in one piece,' although in this case the text was drawn, not printed" (pp. 196-97). Condition of this book: Covers sunned, foxing throughout, overall good and sound. Size: Large Folio (bigger than A3). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing.
