BULGAKOV, MIKHAIL. The Master and Margarita, New York: Grove Press, 1967. Octavo, first American edition, pp. viii, 402, black cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine, translated from the Russian by Mirra Ginsburg. Bulgakov, who lived under constant pressure from the Soviet authorities in the 1930s, declined to emigrate and his work was banned. He was allowed to work at the Moscow Theatre and in off hours tinkered with this novel until he died in 1940. It didn't see publication until the 1960s. Condition of this book: Book near fine with sunning at boards' edges. Jacket age-toned, chip in rear panel, a few minor stains. This is the first USA edition. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 402. Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing.
