JAMES BOSWELL. The Life of Samuel Johnson, L.L.D., in 3 volumes, Dublin: John Chambers (V1), John Ershaw (V2), and Robert Rhames (V3), 1792. Octavo, second edition (pirated -- the first was published in London in 1791), pp. xxxiv, 536; 605; 573, folding Round Robin, folding samples of Johnson's handwriting, bookplate of Mansfield Charles Fuldner, the American artist and collector, tree calf boards with morocco labels to spines. This set used three printers apparently in the interest of speed, and it beat the legitimate second London edition to the market by almost a year. See Pottle 80, Lowndes 242, ESTC T64484. Condition of this set: All boards detached with front cover of V2 perished, extremities rubbed and chipped. Free front endpaper of V1 also perished. Else tight, occasional foxing but clean. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 3-volume set (complete). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Front and back boards both detached.
