BRINKLEY, CAPT. F. Oriental Series, Japan and China, History Arts and Literature, Boston and Tokyo: J.B. Millet, 1901-02. Together with a salesperson's sample book and prospectus for the set. Octavo, No. 62 of the Author's Edition of 1000, red cloth boards with gilt lettering and decoration stamped on spines, color and tritone illustration, 2 large folding color maps, top edges gilt, other edges untrimmed, many leaves unopened. Volume 5 has 2 prints from another book laid in, related but not really part of the set. Wide-ranging survey written by an Irish newspaper owner who spent more than 40 years of his life in Meiji-era Japan. The first 8 volumes of this set cover Japanese culture and history, primeval times and later eras, military manners and weaponry, fine and applied arts, in fact, every important aspect of Japanese life. Volumes 9 through 12 are devoted to China. With extensive use of the color collotype process developed by Kazumasa Ogawa, which was way ahead of its time in producing color photo prints of great fidelity. The salesman's book here contains sample pages and prints from the series, and typical of Millet's obsession with quality, this thin book is a feat of fine printing in itself. It's leather bound with a small piece missing from the front panel and the remains of a paper label on the spine. With a leaflet prospectus laid in. Condition of this set: Over all very good. Boards lightly worn with small but noticeable staining and discoloration. Very clean and tight inside, as if unused. Special Limited Edition, first issue in this format. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 12-volume set (complete). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Over 3 kilos. Category: Antiquarian & Rare; Japan; 1900-1920; History. Pictures of this item not already displayed here available upon request. Inventory No: 54670.
