FRANK CASE. Tales of a Wayward Inn, New York: Frederick A. Stokes, 1938, together with a signed letter to a customer. Octavo, first edition, pp. ix, 390, navy cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine, gilt illustration on front, top edge tinted blue, illustrated plates, lacking the dust jacket, book label on front paste-down, gift inscription on front paste-down, inscription from Case on the half-title, ALS from Case tipped in at the back. Case inscribed the book to a longtime customer, Andrew Blackmore, whose wife also inscribed it to him. The letter from Case is to the wife, discussing the Blackmores' plans to retire to a ranch in Arizona, concluding "We all work too hard in this country. What for?" That's the way Case wrote the book -- clearly and directly. It's his biography as the owner of the Algonquin Hotel, from the early struggles through the heydays with its famous clientele. Condition of this book: Minor soiling to the bottom edge, overall very good. Size: Octavo (standard book size). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing.
