MRS. ANNE GRANT. Memoirs of an American Lady, With Sketches of Manners and Scenes in America as They Existed Before the Revolution, 2 volumes, New York: Dodd, Mead, 1901. Octavo, No. 14 of an edition of 350, pp. xxxviii, 39-327; viii, 300, blue paper-covered boards half-bound in vellum with gilt lettering to spines and gilt coat of arms on fronts, top edges gilt, illustrated plates, book labels on front paste-downs. First issued in London in 1808, with several reprintings. The American Lady of the title was actually not Grant by Catalina Schuyler, with who Grant lived in Albany, N.Y., for many years. Feminist Companion, p. 451, says of the memoir: "This ranks high as biography (of local matriarch Catalina Schuyler), autobiography (developing relationship with her previously unknown father; her passion, at seven, for 'my treasure, Milton and the ragged dictionary') and as history, with both detail and elegiac feeling about colonial life, especially the 'distinguishes race' of Mohawks." Also see Sabin 28296 and Howes G303. Condition of this set: Overall very good; vellum darkened, torn at head of spine in V.1. A few little stains but generally very clean and bright, with 1 plate coming loose. Special Limited Edition, first issue in this format. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 2-volume set (complete).
