Roth, pp. 148-49: "Observations is the culmination of a creative collaboration between Richard Avedon and Alexey Brodovitch [the magazine editor]. ... Capote, who wrote his arch text between Breakfast at Tiffany's and In Cold Blood, is most valuable here for conveying Avedon's words, notably the photographer's observations on the beauty of age."
